Google Gemini Skills Start Rolling Out Today, Replacing Gems

Google is beginning the global rollout of Skills in Gemini, giving users a new way to save, reuse and combine custom instructions for recurring tasks.

Announced on September 30, the feature is designed to replace Google’s existing Gems system over time. Instead of keeping customized instructions inside separate AI assistants, Skills work directly inside Gemini conversations and can be activated whenever they are relevant.

Google Gemini Skills Start Rolling Out Today, Replacing Gems

Google says Skills are now rolling out globally in Gemini chat, while the feature is also beginning its rollout to Google Workspace customers.

What Are Gemini Skills?

Gemini Skills are reusable sets of custom instructions that teach Gemini how to handle a particular type of task.

For example, a user could create a Skill for writing articles in a specific style, preparing presentations, brainstorming ideas or following company brand guidelines.

Once created, a Skill can be activated by typing a forward slash followed by its name in Gemini’s prompt bar.

Google says Gemini can also automatically identify when a particular Skill is relevant to a user’s request.

This means users do not need to repeatedly paste the same detailed instructions every time they perform a familiar task.

Multiple Skills Can Work Together

One of the biggest changes compared with Gems is that Skills are designed to be combined.

Users can apply several Skills to the same task, allowing Gemini to follow different sets of instructions simultaneously.

For example, a user could combine a writing-style Skill with a brand-guidelines Skill. Gemini could then produce content that follows both the preferred writing style and the organization’s branding requirements.

Google describes this as a way to make larger and more complicated workflows easier to manage.

Skills Can Use Reference Files

Google is also expanding Skills beyond simple text instructions.

Users can create Skills that include reference files such as plain-text documents, PDFs and images. These files can provide additional information that Gemini can use when performing the task.

Google says additional capabilities that existed with Gems, including sharing Skills with other users and using Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook content, are planned for the coming weeks.

Gemini Skills Are Replacing Gems

The introduction of Skills marks the beginning of the transition away from Gems, Google’s customizable AI assistants.

Gems will not disappear immediately. Google has announced a phased transition that differs depending on the type of account.

For personal accounts, support for Gems will begin being removed in November 2026. Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit users have a later transition period, while education customers will receive additional time.

Google plans to automatically migrate remaining Gems into Skills when the relevant shutdown takes place.

Users can also begin recreating their Gems as Skills before the transition is complete.

Workspace Rollout Begins Today

The rollout is happening in stages across Google’s products.

For Google Workspace, Skills begin rolling out to Rapid Release domains on October 5, with the initial rollout expected to complete by October 12. Scheduled Release domains are expected to begin receiving the feature on October 19, with completion expected by mid-November.

For the Gemini app itself, the broader rollout begins October 13 and is expected to reach users gradually through mid-November.

This means availability can vary depending on whether someone is using a personal Gemini account, Google Workspace and which release schedule their organization follows.

An Open Format Could Make Skills More Portable

Google is also adopting the Markdown-based SKILL.md standard for Skills.

The company says this open format allows users to copy Skills created on other compatible platforms into Gemini and Workspace apps.

That makes Skills different from a traditional custom assistant tied entirely to one platform. It also puts Google closer to an emerging model where AI instructions and workflows can be reused across different AI tools.

Why the Change Matters

The shift from Gems to Skills is more than a simple naming change.

Gems were designed as customized versions of Gemini that users could return to for specific purposes. Skills instead function as reusable building blocks that can be inserted into normal Gemini conversations and combined with other instructions.

For people who regularly perform repetitive work, that could make Gemini more useful without requiring users to maintain separate conversations or repeatedly explain how they want a task completed.

For Google, the move also creates a more flexible foundation for AI-powered workflows across Gemini and Workspace.

As the rollout continues, the main question will be how quickly Skills gain the remaining capabilities that users previously relied on with Gems.

For now, Google’s new system gives Gemini users a more modular way to turn repeated prompts into reusable AI workflows.
